Information on the results of January-February 2022 on combating drug addiction and drug trafficking

   During January-February of the current year, a total of 1914 criminal cases were revealed as a result of complex search operations carried out by law enforcement agencies in the fight against drug addiction and drug trafficking. Of them, 686 were related to the illegal sale of drugs, 1210 to the illegal acquisition and possession of drugs, 6 to the illegal cultivation of narcotic plants, and 12 to other crimes of this category.

    According to the revealed facts, 1 ton 087 kg 949,825 grams of drugs and psychotropic substances was generally confiscated from illicit trafficking and of that confiscated drugs and psychotropic substances  557 kg 738,882 grams was heroin, 326 kg 716,953 grams was marijuana, 112 kg 668.9 grams was opium, 5 kg 005,744 grams was hashish  198,940 grams was cocaine, 81 kg 633,069 grams was psychotropic substances, 3 kg 987,337 grams was other drugs. Also, 3153 methadone and 73 hemp plants were seized from illegal circulation during this specified period.

     991 people were prosecuted for drug trafficking. Eleven of those prosecuted are foreign citizens. 7 of them were citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, 1 of the Russian Federation and 3 of Turkey. A total of 210 kg 022,362 grams and 2115 pills of various drugs and psychotropic substances were seized from foreign citizens.

    Law enforcement agencies revealed 30 facts of smuggling drugs and psychotropic substances into the country, and 306 kg 692,833 grams and 3153 pills of various drugs and psychotropic substances were seized from illicit trafficking.

     The total value of 1 ton 087 kg 949,825 grams of drugs and psychotropic substances seized from illegal trafficking in 2 months of 2022 is estimated at 37 million 827 thousand AZN         (22 million 235 thousand US dollars).

     Of them, 268 out of 330 people who underwent a medical examination to determine drug use were identified as users and necessary measures were taken in this regard.

     During January-February of the current year, the “802” hotline received 349 citizens' appeals, of which 38 were related to drug trafficking, 137 were related to drug addiction treatment, and 174 were related to other issues (repeated appeals, explanation of the provisions of the legislation, compulsory treatment procedures, etc.). 175 letters were sent to the relevant authorities to take appropriate measures on the mentioned appeals.

    Thus, in order to prevent the spread of drugs and drug addiction through the 802 hotline, operative liaison with relevant organizations and citizens is provided, relevant criminal cases were initiated on the basis of information provided on drug trafficking and a large amount of drugs were seized from drug trafficking, drug users were directed to treatment in specialized medical institutions on the basis of voluntary appeals, psychological support to families suffering from drug addiction and the necessary recommendations were given, explaining the provisions of existing legislation.
